Home in the mountains in New Zealand

They call them The Remarkables. Although the precise etymology for the striking mountain range on New Zealand’s South Island remains a mystery, a popular local explanation posits that 19th century settlers were so struck by the majestic topography that it left them all but speechless: Only one word came to mind. Today, the rocky, snow-capped peaks remain breathtaking as ever. Nestled into a landscape that still leaves visitors at a loss for words, a corner of the terrain is now complemented by a home that’s quietly remarkable in its own right.

Designed by Patterson Associates Architects and interior designer Sonja Hawkins, the residential retreat riffs on local culture and vernacular to celebrate its unique surroundings. Comprising a pair of barn-like gabled forms, one built from stone, and one from timber, the home draws inspiration from local agricultural heritage — the site was once a sheep station — and rural fabric to create a contextually attuned haven, intended as a second home for a couple that frequently entertains family and guests.

“A farm vernacular was carefully prescribed as part of building here; we employed a simple, gabled barn shape, which is endemic to the area,” says architect Andrew Patterson. And while Patterson’s rustic forms gracefully utilize local materials to reflect the site’s cultural history, Hawkins’ elegant interiors are similarly rooted in a sense of place, where a coherent palette of natural materials — including ample wood, stone and terracotta — effortlessly translates the architectural language into an intimate residential setting.

Inside, the layout takes advantage of the slightly staggered dual-volume form to create a comfortable sense of separation between different zones. Sited closer to the street, the smaller of the two contains living spaces and a kitchenette, as well as guest bedrooms. Meanwhile, a larger living space, kitchen and primary bedroom — as well as smaller sleeping areas — are all located in the more spacious main structure, with an eye-catching “portcullis” connecting the two buildings.

Inspired by grand medieval gates, the liminal yet romantic space allows the two volumes to be joined or separated as needed. “It needed to feel comfortable for two people, but also have that flexibility and the ability to expand for others,” says Hawkins. And whether the home is configured as a pair of discrete suites or a continuous space, the interiors feel airy, welcoming and generous.

And the heart of the home is the kitchen. Anchored by a striking Poliform kitchen designed for entertainment, the functional yet refined space features a Fisher & Paykel Induction Cooktop with Integrated Ventilation, as well as an Integrated Dishwasher plus Single DishDrawer, and a Combination Steam Oven within the island bunch. Behind a sliding timber door, meanwhile, a hidden scullery is easily accessible from the main kitchen, allowing visible work areas to remain free of clutter. Here, a Fisher & Paykel Combination Microwave Oven is paired with a Refrigerator Freezer and Column Wine Cabinet, which are seamlessly concealed within custom cabinetry. Outside, a seamlessly integrated Fisher & Paykel DCS grill brings culinary life into the great outdoors. And what better place to take in the scenery.

While the expertly appointed kitchen combines exceptional culinary performance and elegantly understated style, Patterson and Hawkins’ considered design lets the surrounding landscape speak loudest. Through the carefully placed kitchen window, the spectacular mountain scenery unfolds across the horizon. It leaves you almost speechless.
