DesignTO Festival 2025 brings people together to celebrate contemporary design across Toronto. As Canada’s largest annual design festival celebrating design as a multidisciplinary form of thinking and making, the show hosts over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week each January. Since 2011, the DesignTO Festival has welcomed over 1 million visitors, showcased the work of over 6,500 artists and designers, and reached over 2 billion people through print and digital media.

Here are three ways you can participate in the Festival:

1. Independent Projects:

Independent Projects are exhibitions, events (e.g. tours, talks, workshops), and window installations that are wholly created and executed by an individual or organization during the DesignTO Festival at a venue of their choice (in-person or online).

2. Venue-Designer Matchmaking Program

This program pairs designers with a venue to host their project. Projects include exhibitions, events (e.g. tours, talks, workshops), and window installations that are wholly created and executed by an individual or organization during the DesignTO Festival at the host venue. Host venues provide their spaces free-of-charge and pay the registration fee.

3. DesignTO Projects

DesignTO Projects are exhibitions and events at the Festival curated and executed by DesignTO. Participation in these projects is through a combination of open calls for submission and by invitation.

Esther Mahlangu

This Autumn, Serpentine will unveil a new site-specific mural by artist Esther Mahlangu. On view in the garden at Serpentine North, the monumental painting will celebrate concepts of community and unity. Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu, which translates directly from Ndebele as ‘I am because you are’, will mark her first public artwork in the UK.Painted over sixteen wooden panels, the work depicts Ndebele shapes and patterns outlined with a black border.

Celebrated for her brightly coloured geometric paintings rooted in matrilineal Ndebele culture, Dr Esther Mahlangu (b. 1935, South Africa) has been creating large-scale and site-specific works for over eight decades. She began painting at the age of ten, learning the Ndebele techniques and visual language of covering houses in bold patterns from her mother and grandmother.

Mahlangu uses natural pigments mixed with clay, soil and cow dung to paint directly on the exteriors of structures in her village. Rather than using stencils and tape to achieve lines and shapes, she paints by hand with chicken feathers and an array of different brushes. The artist also works with acrylic paints on canvas, which allows her to explore different scales and a broader colour palette.

light: visionary perspectives for aga khan museum's 10th anniversary, azure

Marking the Aga Khan Museum’s 10th anniversary, Light: Visionary Perspectives, the Museum’s newest major exhibition, explores light’s multifaceted impact. Featuring contemporary installations by prominent international and Canadian artists, architects, and designers, including Anila Quayyum Agha, Tannis Nielsen, Olafur Eliasson, Kimsooja, and Anish Kapoor, the exhibition delves into how light shapes history and continues to influence our perceptions, emotions, and understanding of the world. These installations use unique designs to illustrate various physical properties and symbolisms of light, showcasing its universal ability to unite individuals, inspire empathy, and highlight the significance of diversity.

Extending beyond the galleries, Light: Visionary Perspectives also explores how light interacts with the building’s architecture and design. The ephemeral yet essential qualities of light set the tone for the building’s design inspiration; from the granite exterior to the shadows cast by the mashrabiya pattern on the Courtyard’s surrounding glass, the omnipresence of light is felt and seen even on gloomy days. This notion of light was built into the Museum, serving as a metaphor for the pluralistic unity that flows through its exhibitions and offerings.
