Winter Stations 2025

Offering international designers and emerging artists an opportunity to transform lifeguard stations along Toronto’s winter beaches into whimsical design installations, Winter Stations 2025 launches competition worldwide.

This year’s theme, Dawn, marks the beginning of a new era for Winter Stations as it steps into its 11th year, symbolizing a fresh chapter in its creative journey. Just as the first light of morning breaks through the darkness, the exhibition will explore the moments of profound change that redefine and shape our existence, highlighting the delicate process of shedding old layers to emerge as something new. Dawn embraces the evolving self and the endless possibilities of change and transition, whether it be personal, natural, or spiritual, capturing the raw beauty of growth and renewal.

Dawn represents the shift from night to day, and this year, designers are invited to explore how Winter Stations can evolve, and to consider the future of the exhibition and its relationship with the public and the environment. Through this lens, Dawn challenges designers to explore how Winter Stations can adapt, grow, and metamorphose in the coming years, shaping the urban landscape in imaginative and innovative ways.

Launched in 2014 by RAW Architects, Winter Stations challenges local and international designers to transform the utilitarian lifeguard stations along Toronto’s beaches into works of public art. The competition, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, has seen entries from more than 90 countries.

Registrations are now open for Winter Stations 2025 with the deadline for submissions on November 4, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST. Winners will be announced early January. There is no fee to enter the competition which welcomes entries from all around the world. The winning teams will be rewarded $2,000 (CAD).

All Winter Stations 2025 installations must be able to withstand Toronto’s winter weather for several weeks along the waterfront. Designs must also consider new technical guidelines that will facilitate future exhibitions in other parts of Toronto. The built installations will be unveiled on Family Day Weekend in Canada (February 17, 2025).

Formica Corporation announces the opening of the 2025 FORM Student Innovation Competition. Now in its eighth year, this annual furniture design competition invites students studying architecture and interior design in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to share their inventiveness through original designs that feature Formica Brand products with this year’s theme “Designing for Well-being.”

Theme

The focal point of the FORM 2025 competition, “Designing for Well-being”, is based on the rising understanding of neuroaesthetics, the field concerning how the aesthetics around us can impact our mental and physical health, and its impact on interior design. This theme will allow students to demonstrate how elements like colour, sound and patterns can have a positive impact on one’s well-being.

Benefits

The top three winners will be invited to attend NeoCon 2025, the leading design and event for commercial interiors, as guests of Formica Corporation for the opportunity to network with industry professionals and gain exposure to the design community. The grand prizewinner will receive a $2,000 cash award and their design will be fabricated and displayed during NeoCon 2025 in Chicago. The second-place winner will be awarded $1,000 and the third-place winner will receive $500.

How to Enter

Students entering will provide a project statement and colour rendering of their furniture design that includes at least three or more Formica Brand or FENIX products.

Competition submissions must be emailed to designcontest@formica.com. For more information, including complete competition details, resources and rules, visit the link below.

The International Garden Festival is launching a call for proposals to select designers to create the new temporary gardens for the Festival’s 26th edition, which will open on June 20, 2025, on the site of Les Jardins de Métis | Reford Gardens.

2025 Theme – BORDERS

Borders partition a whole, giving it a value of its own. Tangible, while not necessarily visible, they mark a distinction of state, nature, and materiality. They “separate” digital from analog, inside from outside, garden from expanse, landscape from geography. Sometimes fixed, rigid, or more or less hermetic, they can also be porous, ambiguous, or multiple. Constantly renegotiated, borders also act as passageways, places of encounter and exchange.

For its 26th edition, the International Garden Festival invites designers from all horizons to rethink the notion of borders in today’s post-colonial context, and to transpose their reflections into a garden-environment that blurs disciplines, renegotiates preconceived ideas about the garden/landscape, and actively dialogues with the visitor.

Eligibility of Candidates

This call for proposals is open to all landscape architects, architects, visual artists, and multidisciplinary teams from Canada and abroad. The Festival encourages participants to form multidisciplinary teams. Applicants are limited to one proposal, either as individuals or as a team. Participants can be from a single city or country, or cross international boundaries.

Submission Guidelines

Designers are invited to design a garden that can take place in one or the other of the axes of the Festival. The artistic and technical committee of the 2025 International Garden Festival will identify, in collaboration with the designers, the site that will best showcase their project. Designers will be asked to imagine their garden for exhibition for at least two summers, and to propose strategies for the repurposing or recycling of the garden or its materials after the end of its exhibition.

Peja Culture Pavilion Competition

The city center of Peja, Kosovo, hosts a historically significant site that has long been a focal point for community gatherings and social interactions. Rich in cultural and recreational elements, this central location, originally designed for leisure and relaxation, has been an integral part of the urban landscape. One of its most notable features is an ancient water source dating back to the 15th century, which remains under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of Kosovo. Despite its historical and cultural importance, the site has been neglected for years, falling into disrepair and disuse. The Peja Culture Pavilion competition aims to revitalize this area, transforming it into a vibrant public hotspot.

This competition seeks innovative ideas to transform the site into a lively participatory public area. The primary objective is to design a flexible multipurpose pavilion and an engaging outdoor space that revitalizes the area. The pavilion should serve as a cultural center that not only integrates the 15th-century water fountain but also enhances its historical importance. The pavilion should provide a versatile environment for social events, art activities, and community gatherings. Additionally, the outdoor space should be designed to become a vibrant public hotspot, fostering social interactions and cultural engagement.

Eligibility

The Peja Culture Pavilion Competition is open to all. No professional qualification is required. Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams (4 team members maximum). Correspondence with organizers must be conducted in English; All information submitted by participants must be in English.
