Samsung just released an infographic detailing the evolution of their TV remote controls from 1985 to 2014. Here is a quick summary, if the image takes a while to load.

1985 – Samsung’s first TV remote, Model TM07, had 23 buttons
Early 1990’s – The addition of colored keys and playback keys increased the button count to 46
Late 1990’s – A sliding panel reveals even more buttons, bringing the count to 54
Early 2000’s – Finally implements standardized channel/volume keys
Late 2000’s – First attempts to use Bluetooth and wheel control
2010 – Added 3D feature buttons
2011 – Double sided remote offers QWERTY keyboard
2012 – Touch pad and voice recognition used
2013 – New touch pad enables scrolling
2014 – Introduces pebble-like oval design and gestures, model 2014 Smart Control
